![]() I was so ready to play Phoebe - she’s edgy, cool and doesn’t care what people think. Hometown: Los Angeles Instagram: one surprising quality you share with your character? Playing Phoebe is my first role as a full-on teenager. He also trained me in his own time, imparting gems from his enormous experience with various martial arts. He always had the biggest smile on his face and genuinely tried to connect with everyone on set. Who was your best friend on set and why? Jon Xue Zhang - he’s just a lovely, stand-up guy, a giant teddy bear (who could legitimately obliterate you if you crossed him). We both enjoy being in the kitchen - eating, experimenting, eating some more. And good chefs! Charles is a baker, and I love cooking. What’s one surprising quality you share with your character? We’re both massive gluttons. It was overwhelming because at that moment, it felt like everything I had sacrificed to get to that point wasn’t all for nothing. I buried my face and was starting to tune out and prepare for heartbreak, and then abruptly they said, “Anyway, you got the part!” When it finally started to sink in, I wept. It sounded like a college rejection letter. But they were super apologetic and tiptoeing around, thanking me profusely for all my hard work over the grueling seven-week process. ![]() I thought to myself, “Here we go, good news.” If it wasn’t going my way, my manager would be the one calling. Hometown: Taipei, Taiwan Instagram: about your audition sticks out the most to you? They screwed with me! A few days after our test, I finally got the call from our casting director and producers. What’s your favorite Netflix show or film of all time (besides your project)? Tick, Tick… Boom! The soundtrack and cinematography are… chef’s kiss! And Andrew Garfield, major chef’s kiss. What’s one surprising quality you share with your character? We both hate mayo. Not the best impression, but hey, I guess it worked out. I was so flustered and was frantically trying to wipe myself down when I got called in. Moments before I went into the audition room, I reached into my bag and discovered a pen had exploded all over my backpack, so my hands were now completely covered in ink. ![]() What about your audition stands out the most to you? I remember my callback was on the very last day of eighth grade and I came rushing from school. I was ecstatic, but so unaware of the incredible universe that I was about to enter. I had just turned 14 and at the time I was auditioning for a one-off little romance movie (that I absolutely loved). When I was first cast as Kitty I truly had no idea how much she was going to change my life. Hometown: Vancouver, British Columbia Instagram: us about the moment you found out you were cast. Keep ’em coming, Nick and Vanessa! I’m begging you. What’s your favorite Netflix show or film of all time (besides your project)? This is hard! But, I really, really like reality TV, and The Ultimatum is pretty incredible content. I was incredibly insecure within the position, had absolutely no idea what I was doing, and I’m 95% sure no one on my team respected me in the slightest, but I was figuring it out! Malcolm is in a similar position and is figuring it out in the most Malcolm way. I was an executive assistant to a CEO of a company, then promoted to a manager of a small team prior to landing the role of Malcolm. What’s one surprising quality you share with your character? Tenacity, for sure. I cried with a mouth full of French toast - it was the perfect moment. While I was home and eating, she called again and told me I booked the series. I was in the drive-thru line of Burger King, celebrating a successful audition with an order of French toast sticks and hash browns, when my agent called and told me I was a top contender for the role.
